Characteristics of the 2001 Census
The 2001 Census continues to provide signs of an aging, sometimes fleeing, population. Some of the same trends remain, but others have become more severe.

Population
The center of Venice, particularly areas near the Piazza San Marco, an area popular with tourists and vulnerable to floods, is very sparsely populated, the residential buildings seemingly having given up in favor of allowing business and retail dominion over the area. Population remains notably higher nearer to the edges of the island, but the only census tract with over 572 residents is in northern Cannaregio, near the Ospedale SS. Giovanni e Paolo.

Elderly Population
The proportion of elderly remains mostly static compared to the 1991 Census, with some census tracts seeing the proportion of elderly citizens rise and others seeing it fall. Particularly near the center of the island, the various tracts seem to have shuffled about rather than changed significantly. The most notable exception is is northern Cannaregio, where once again the Ospedale seems to be an attractive force. It has, by far, the largest census tract in which the elderly make up a majority of the population.

Working Population
The 2001 Census data included a section on the place of work of the citizens of Venice. Notable areas of high worker population include the Ospedale and the Piazza San Marco, and in fact the entire area around the Piazza is is an island of moderate to high worker population in the center of the city, perhaps reflecting the large number of tourist attractions in the vicinity.

While there are some tracts with a high working population scattered throughout Venice, it would seem that in most cases, a high residential population and a high working population are mutually exclusive. One particularly outstanding example of this apparent relationship is the island of Giudecca, which is just south of the main island. It is fairly heavily populated, yet barely anyone works there; this would seem to imply that the majority of residents take the boat over to the main island of Venice on a daily basis. The extent of this dependence on public transit and the particular pressures it places on the system may merit further study.

Characteristics of the 1991 Census
The 1991 Census reveals an aging population which has spread mostly to the outskirts of the city, leaving the center to storefronts and tourists. While a more detailed analysis goes beyond the scope of the census and enters the realm of sociological research, it is not inappropriate to say that the maps of the city suggest a departure - particularly of the young - from a city overwhelmed by tourism.

Population
Unsurprisingly, the center of Venice - particularly near the Piazza San Marco, a popular tourist destination which is very vulnerable to floods - is sparsely populated, having been taken up by commercial locations of varying sorts. Of note is an area of moderate population density in northern Cannaregio, which may be attractive due to its proximity to the Ospedale SS. Giovanni e Paolo, a large hospital. Additionally, the spatious northwestern corner of Venice is well-populated, possibly because it is out of the way of many typical tourist attractions.

Elderly Population
While the population of Venice is sparse, it has a surprisingly high proportion of elderly citizens, with the elderly population of many census tracts - even in the center of the city - exceeding 20%. In fact, the proportion of elderly persons in the population is more evenly distributed than the actual population, indicating that the management of care of the elderly is an issue which is relevant to all of Venice, not just certain localities.

Once again, northern Cannaregio pops up as an area of significance. While in terms of population alone, it is remarkable but not astounding, it is a large area with an incredible density of senior citizens - in fact, they make up the majority of inhabitiants in that area. This seems to support the theory mentioned above that the Ospedale is a significant draw for locals, as the disproportionately large population of elderly Venetians is the demographic group most in need of nearby health services.

Characteristics of the 1981 Census
The 1981 Census shows a relatively healthy city, one without significant clustering of any particular population. At this stage, Venice is fairly uniform across its census tracts, without wild variation or excessively large clusters of activity or dormancy.

Population
Each census tract seems to be very similar to its neighbors, with no sharp borders resulting in dramatic population differences in geographically similar areas. While the Piazza San Marco has fewer residents than the surrounding areas, the drop-off does not appear terribly sharp. While there are more sparsely populated regions near the docks, this is not surprising, as the maritime activity which has busied Venice for centuries dominates large portions of the available land.

Elderly Population
Similarly to its overall population, the elderly population of Venice does not seem to be concentrated around a particular area. The island of Giudecca seems to be younger than the rest of the city, perhaps because elderly residents are more motivated to plan to avoid the hassle of having to wait for a boat every time they want to get to the rest of Venice. Additionally, some areas which are distant from the center of the city - once again, the docks, as well as some census tracts in the east - are younger than the rest. It appears that this is simply the continuation of a pattern previously observed in Census 1981.
Characteristics of the 1971 Census
The 1971 Census shows a relatively young and healthy city, still fairly packed with residents.

Population
Each census tract seems to be very similar to its neighbors, with no sharp borders resulting in dramatic population differences in geographically similar areas. While the Piazza San Marco has fewer residents than the surrounding areas, the drop-off does not appear terribly sharp. The best adjective for the city in this regard seems to be "well-populated".

Elderly Population
The elderly population, while smaller as a proportion of the total compared to later years, is clustered around the center of the city, with a couple of outlying districts with a proportion of elderly persons significantly higher than their neighbors.

Algorowara:

As part of the Venice Project Center, we are interested in tracking trends in the population of Venice to better discern the demographic dynamics of the city, and how we and others are affecting them. Thankfully, the Istituto nazionale di statistica (ISTAT) conducts a census every ten years, allowing us to compare data gathered at consistent intervals using a time-tested and well-funded methodology.

Scope of Census
So far the Venice Project Center has organized pages on data from the years 1971, 1981, 1991, and 2001. These data have a minimum resolution unit called a census tract, which is a semi-arbitrary subdivision - it is generally of a certain size, and does not cross the borders of any island, but it is not by definition (though it may be by choice or coincidence) a reflection of an actual physically or culturally distinct area.

Caveat
Since census tracts are not constant in size, shape, or number from year to year, direct comparisons between similarly positioned census tracts in different years can be deceiving. It would be more wise to evaluate an entire census holistically, and compare entire censuses to each other in search of a pattern. Additionally, even census tracts in the same year, being non-uniform in size, should not be directly compared unless either a) the tracts are of similar size, shape, and position, or b) the quantity being evaluated is not size-dependent (such as a proportion rather than a count).

Characteristics of Census Trends
Overall, the population of Venice has been declining for over half a century. Additionally, the census seems to indicate that its population is growing older, which is consistent with a declining number of young people choosing to start a life in Venice, leaving the elderly behind.

Both of these trends seem to be connected to the Piazza San Marco. It was one of the first areas to drop in population, and appears to be the most sparsely populated now. Similarly, the elderly population of Venice seems to have started to grow there, as far back as 1971 and spreading outward even as far as Giudecca. This apparent connection between the two trends seems to support the theory that the departure of the young is behind the dropping population in Venice: as the general population leaves, the elderly are left behind to become an increasingly large fraction of the remaining residents.
To differently represent the changing population of the city over time, the images here display a sequence of maps, each from a different decade of the census. The map to the left displays a dot map, with each resident of the city represented by a dot somewhere in their census tract. Because the census tract is the smallest unit of precision we have available, the placement of an individual within their census tract is random, so it does not reflect differences in population density within a census tract. The map to the right shows the percent of the population who are sixty-five years of age or more.

Population
The key here indicates the number of persons living in the given census tract. It is not scaled by area.

The dot map shown above displays one dot for every resident, placed randomly within the census tract of their dwelling.

Elderly Population
The key here indicates the proportion of persons living in the given census tract who are elderly (65+ years).

Additionally, even census tracts in the same year, being nonuniform in size, should not be directly compared unless either a) the tracts are of similar size, shape, and position, or b) the quantity being evaluated is not size-dependent (such as a proportion rather than a count).

To differently represent the changing population of the city over time, the images above display a sequence of maps, each from a different decade of the census. The map to the right displays a dot map, with each resident of the city represented by a dot somewhere in their census tract. Because the census tract is the smallest unit of precision we have available, the placement of an individual within their census tract is random, so it does not reflect differences in population density within a census tract. The map to the left shows the percent of the population who are sixty-five years of age or more.

Additionally, even census tracts in the same year, being nonuniform in size, should not be directly compared unless either a) the tracts are of similar size, shape, and position, or b) the quantity being evaluated is not size-dependent (such as a proportion rather than a count).
