A pontile (pl. pontili) is a wooden dock that extends into a canal. Occasionally, a pontile will have steps. Since a pontile is made of wood, frequent maintenance is required to replace any supporting posts and boards that may have rotted.
Construction
A pontile is typically supported by wooden posts and occasionally, by cement posts. Increasingly, recycled plastic posts, which are impervious to saltwater and other decay, are replacing wood posts.
Typically, the lower steps are covered with algae and therefore, are unusable.
There are 1650 docks scattered throughout Venice and are an essential component of the city. Since boats are the most efficient way to transport cargo, passengers, or to just get around the city; having an abundance of docks available is critical for the city.
In Venice, rive are the most common dock, representing 80% of all docks in the city. Fondamente have some presence in Venice (18% of all docks) but are not as prevalent as rive.
A fondamenta di carico/scarico, or known more simply as a fondamenta, is any strip of sidewalk along a canal where there is the ability for a boat to secure itself to the dock. The material used to create a fondamenta is Istrian stone and/or brick for the base and the surface is usually paved with trachite or porphyry. One way to think about a fondamenta is as a loading zone where spots are convenient for people such as cargo drivers to unload items from their boat. Drivers are also able to load and unload their boats to islands without it protruding into the canal. Not having a dock that protrudes into the canal is important for some parts of Venice because some canals are narrow and if the dock protruded into the canal, it could cause that canal to be inaccessible to other boats.
There are so few pontili (2% of all docks) in Venice because of the limitations of many of the canals.
There are so few pontili (2% of all docks) in Venice because of the limitations of many of the canals.

There are 1650 docks scattered throughout Venice and are an essential component of the city. Since boats are the most efficient way to transport cargo, passengers, or to just get around the city; having an abundance of docks available is critical for the city.

Presence of Dock Types
In Venice, Rive are the most common dock, representing 80% of all docks in the city. Fondamente have some presence in Venice (18% of all docks) but are not as prevalent as rive. There are so few pontili (2% of all docks) in Venice because of the limitations of many of the canals.
