			A bell’s tuning is mostly due to its shape and the thickness of the material at different parts of the bell. In order to tune the bell, the bells are cast to be thicker than required and then metal is removed from the interior of the bell using a vertical lathe or boring machine at certain locations in the interior of the bell. Removing material from the lip will sharpen the nominal, prime, and tierce. Tuning the soundbow will flatten the nominal and tierce. Tuning between the soundbow and mid-waist will have the most effect on the hum, with a lesser impact on the pitch of the other partials.
