	Symbols are a sub-set of [[Material Culture\|material culture]] that have traditionally been used in Venice to denote ownership of a building or affiliation with a particular organization. The majority of the symbols found within the city are confraternity symbols, which were used to denote the city's ''scuole''. There were six prominent ''scuole'' in Venice that were referred to as the ''[[Scuole Grandi]]'', and to whom most of the confraternity symbols relate.
