This past Thursday, we became aware of an initiative by Marco Trevisan and [http://bazzmann.it/ Bazzmann Srl], who presented '''''[http://venipedia.it/ venipedia.it]''''' with [http://bazzmann.it/articolo/venipedia-l%E2%80%99enciclopedia-di-venezia-presentazione-del-progetto great fanfare] at the Marciana Library in Venice on October 11. It was featured in the Gazzettino and the Nuova Venezia and it has a [https://www.facebook.com/venipedia.enciclopedia.di.venezia Facebook page]. So far, the site has no content at and it does not look like it will be an open wiki system.

This comes almost five years after we first launched this Venipedia site. We have even had a [https://www.facebook.com/pages/Venipedia/171758709511606?sk=info presence on Facebook] since 2008. An [http://venice2point0.blogspot.ca/2008/09/wiked-venipedia.html original blog post] about the Venipedia was dated September 29, 2008. [http://venice2point0.blogspot.ca/2009/02/venipedia-20.html Another one] was posted on February 6, 2009. In fact a simple Google search for "Venipedia" today shows this site at the top of the list.

We are very concerned that a for-profit company would create a similar site using an established name. It is contrary to good business practices to use a pre-existing name, with all of the confusion that might ensue. Unless, of course, this was done on purpose to leverage the  open-content wiki that we are sharing with the world through Venipedia.org.

WPI students, who have been the primary contributors to the Venipedia to date, will be arriving in Venice on October 21, and will be working hard to contribute to this site until December 15. Most importantly, we will be upgrading this wiki to employ the latest technological improvements that we have just demonstrated at the City of Boston and at MIT.

What Mr. Trevisan and his colleagues are doing would have been perfectly fine, except for the choice of the name of the initiative, which smacks of outrageous plagiarism. If you are a supporter of Venipedia.org, please make your feelings known to the authors of this "identity theft" and do your best to disseminate the facts. We greatly appreciate your support at this challenging time, and we will keep you posted on the developments.
