Canal maintenance occurs when conditions in the canals have greatly deteriorated. Maintenance is performed as needed and little is done in terms of preventative care. Insula, an organization founded in 1997, is responsible for performing maintenance throughout the city. Jobs are normally contracted out by Insula to construction companies. Dredging is one of the most common maintenance operations performed, and occurs when sediment levels become too high. Dredging records exist but data is tightly controlled by Insula and not all information might be available to the general public.
