Symbols are a sub-set of material culture that have traditionally been used in Venice to denote ownership of a building or affiliation with a particular organization. The majority of the symbols found within the city are confraternity symbols, which were used to denote the city's scuole. There were six prominent scuole in Venice that were referred to as the Scuole Grandi, and to whom most of the confraternity symbols relate. Other types of symbols refer to hospitals and various religious organizations. The majority of the symbols found in Venice are classified as reliefs, or low reliefs in particular.
Statistics
- The oldest symbol is located in San Marco and dates from 1300 AD.
- The most recent symbol is located in Castello and dates from 1755 AD.
- The symbol in the most need of restoration is located in Dorsoduro and dates from 1575 AD.
