Another type of riva is a place to dock at the end of the street where there are no steps. In Venice, there are 1321 riva (1627 in the Veneitan Lagoon) that are located throughout the city. A feature that is nice about riva are that it is a little easier to load and unload items regardless of the tide level because there will be a step that is at an ideal level for boats to load and unload passengers or cargo. However, some of the lower steps may be covered with moss or wet so people have to be careful when loading and unloading on lower steps on a riva.

- Steps that are parallel to the canal
- Perpendicular steps that jet out into the canal slightly
- Parallel steps that jet out into the canal slightly
- Monumental Staircase (wide stairs that wrap around into the canal)
- Perpendicular steps that protude into the canal from the street by a platform
- An opening in the canal wall with no steps
- A ramp that is parallel with the canal
