Why Excercise In Venice?
So some of you may realize that Venice is somewhat of a paradise for those with a sweet tooth. And despite all the walking you will be doing, this may not be enough to compensate for the amount of pastries and chocolates you'll be eating. One way to combat those pastries is by going to the gym and exercising. For those looking to use the whole gym and work out there are a few options. You can just pay each time you go, but that will add up quick with daily passes costing around 7-10 euro. The gyms obviously vary in size and what they offer and so does the price of entry.
Personal Experience
The only gym that has been experienced first hand so far is Fitness Point on Cannaregio, near Ca' Corte. The gym is fairly small and a little cramped, but has everything you need. This is also the gym that Professor Carrera attends and so he was able to get the enrollment fee taken off. Each gym has an enrollment fee, but as with most aspects, varies from gym to gym. The price for six weeks was 65 euro for Fitness Point. This was only for use of the machines, no lessons or classes included. The staff here do not speak much English, but enough to get the basics across. They are all very friendly and are willing to help you if you ask. There are a few keywords that you may wish to learn so that you can understand what someone is saying to you when they want to use the machine that you're on. But even if you don't, its easy enough to get your point across and everyone is friendly and accepting that you don't speak Italian. Once they realize that you're not from the area, they often times will ask you questions as to where you're from and what you're doing in Venice.
Variety
There are several gyms in Venice and you may want to do some more research on whats in each gym before you join. Depending on what you want to do with your membership, your price will vary. But no matter what you do, be prepared to drop a decent chunk of change. Also consider the distance of the gym from your apartment. You may think its a good idea to choose a gym thats far away so you can run to it for your warmup, but when its cold or raining, the last thing your going to want to do is go to the gym. For more information on gyms throughout Venice, go [here]. Below is a map of all the gyms located on this site, along with all the WPI apartments so that you can find the ones in your area. The green icons with the H in them are the apartments and the red icons with the G in them are the gyms.
Weight Lifting Not Your Thing?
Another great way to exercise in Venice is running, which you can look further in Running in Venice. If running outside is too cold for you and only wish to use the treadmills, you may just want to buy some thermal cloths because Venetian gyms aren't cheap.
Gyms Throughout The City
The green bubbles with the H's are the apartment and the red bubbles with the G's are the gyms. If you want directions from/to each you can use Google Maps by entering the longitude and latitude coordinates into the address bar. Just make sure you select walking directions and not driving.
