Squerarioli at work

The squerarioli are the Venetian shipbuilders and artisans who work in the squeri to create the traditional watercraft that make up one of the most important aspects of Venetian heritage. They do not use blueprints or line drawings; instead, they use the knowledge they have learned from the “masters” in their field. The knowledge is passed down from generation to generation. Unfortunately, new technologies and the arrival of motorboats are modern-day rivals of the squerarioli. The few that remain are dedicated to the construction of traditional lagoon-watercrafts and gondole.
