This article contains information about a typical Venetian pontile.
For a list of pontili, see Pontili.

A pontile (pl. pontili) is a wooden dock that extends into a canal. Occasionally, a pontile will have steps. Since a pontile is made of wood, frequent maintenance is required to replace any supporting posts and boards that may have rotted.[1]

Construction

A pontile is typically supported by wooden posts and occasionally, by cement posts. Increasingly, recycled plastic posts, which are impervious to saltwater and other decay, are replacing wood posts.
