Places to Eat

When in Italy, the one thing you should not miss out on is the food. There is a lot of variety, and it all tastes good. Here is a list of places you should definitely try.

Pampo

Located in S. Elena in Campo Stringari. A reasonably priced restaurant with a long WPI history. This is where group meals will be generally held, as well as many (if not all) of the smaller meals that Fabio will have with each project team. Primarily serves seafood, but other meat dishes can be found as well. If you go there by yourself, tell Federico (the proprietor) that you're a student of Fabio's. Directions: walk or take a boat to S.Elena (the treed island at the Eastern end of Venice). Once off the boat, take a left at the fork (stone monument to the vistims of the 1970 tornado). Walk all the way to the buildings and take that street (left Tobacconist tothe left) until you reach a campo with trees. Take a left and walk along the southern side of the campo. The restaurant is at the corner. Should take no more than 3 minutes from the stop. If you are walking from your apartments, along the waterside, you'll walk past the Biennale gardens and reach a bridge that crosses into S.Elena. Continue straight ahead on the path that leads away from the bridge until you hit the buildings. Keep going on the street and you'll see Pampo at the next corner on your right.

Bepi's

This is a sandwich shop/bar located one minute from the VPC on the Strada Nova (ask Fabio or the rest of the VPC staff for directions). Fabio has patronized Bepi's for years, and rightfully so. The sandwiches are 3 euros apiece and are cooked to perfection. Try the ham/cheese/mushroom sandwich - we guarantee that you won't find anything better anywhere else in Venice. The shop also serves espresso, cappuccino, spritzes, and all kinds of other beverages.

Pizza e Kebab

Also a short walk from the VPC (in the Campo SS. Apostoli), this place offers delicious kebab rolls. You can go for the non-vegetarian shwarma/kebab, or if ou are a vegetarian, try the falafel. They also serve pizza (although that isn't a major selling point of the shop, in our opinion) and meal combinations.

Pizza shop in the Campo Santa Margherita

If you are hanging out at Duchamp's or another American bar, it is worth your time to go straight across the campo into the small pizza shop. They offer the best deal on good pizza that we could find in Venice. A family-sized pizza that serves three can be yours for 11 euros (including two toppings). The pizza is not only cheap, but also tastes better than most. Definitely worth the money!

Other Places

Some other places to explore:

Beware: Unless you are looking to spend upwards of 100 euros per person for food, DO NOT go to Harry's Bar for dinner. If you want to spend more modestly, do go there and try the Bellini (that's where it was invented), which should set you back by around 14 euros.
