Wikimecum:Sharepoint
Overview
Sharepoint is an Online Project Management Tool from Microsoft that is available to all WPI Students (but with preference given to IQP and MQP groups). Please contact the WPI Helpdesk (508-831-5888 or [email protected]) for information about setting up a Sharepoint site. Sharepoint is designed to be used with Microsoft Office and has direct integration into the 2007 versions of Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Outlook.
Document Library
This feature allows files to be stored and accessed at a single location, and provides revision control with file locking. Revision control helps to keep a record of your work and allows you to restore a file to a previous version if any problems arise, and also allows files to be easily shared among the group without needing to email them to each other. File locking prevents others from editing a file while another has it "signed out" to edit. Others will still be able to view the locked file.
Calendar
The calendar feature allows all members to share a common calendar on which meetings, events, and due dates can be easily planned and viewed.
Tasks
This feature allows tasks to be assigned to the different members of the group, complete with Due Dates and Notes (among other pieces of information).
Contacts
This feature provides an easy method to maintain contact information (name, email, address, etc.) with all of your sponsors and collaborators.
Wiki
Sharepoint offers a wiki feature that can be very useful for recording ideas and other pieces of information. A wiki is also useful for recording procedures and processes (methodology) as it can contain images and links to other websites.
