A pontile is a wooden dock that extends into a canal with steps at the end. There are a 29 examples of "pontile" in Venice. Since a pontile projects into the canal, they are mainly found in wider Venetian canals such as the Grand Canal. Due to the nature of a pontile as they project into the canal, there are fewer pontili in Venice than there are of fondamenta and riva. This article contains information about a typical Venetian pontile.
For a list of pontili, see Pontili.

A pontile (pl. pontili) is a wooden dock that extends into a canal. Occasionally, a pontile will have steps. Since a pontile is made of wood, frequent maintenance is required to replace any supporting posts and boards that may have rotted.[1]

Construction

A pontile is typically supported by wooden posts and occasionally, by cement posts. Increasingly, recycled plastic posts, which are impervious to saltwater and other decay, are replacing wood posts.

An example of a pontile.
