A fondamenta di carico is simply any strip of sidewalk along a canal where there is the ability for a boat to secure itself to the dock. One way to think about a fondamenta di carico is as a loading zone where spots are convenient for people such as cargo drivers to unload their deliveries from their boat. Drivers are able to load and unload their boats to islands without having it protrude into the canal. Not having a dock that protrudes into the canal is important for some parts of Venice because some canals are narrow and if the dock protruded into the canal, it could cause that canal to be inaccessible to other boats.<ref>Duffy, Jill, Justin Gagliardi, Kate Mirtle, and Amanda Tucker. An example of a Fondamenta di Carico/Scarico.

A fondamenta di carico/scarico, is a strip of sidewalk (fondamenta) along a canal where it is possible to temporarily dock a boat for unloading and loading. What makes it possible for a boat to dock to a section of a fondamenta is the availability of rings or poles to tie the boat to.[1]
