The term riva (pl. rive) refers to a dock that is made out of stone and typically has steps that go from street level to the canal. Some rive are located at the end of a street and have no steps. Typically, the lower steps are covered with algae and therefore, are unusable.[1]

Types of Riva

Each riva can be classified into one of ten categories described below. [2]

  1. Has no steps (at the end of a street)
  2. Steps that are perpendicular to the canal
  3. Steps that are parallel to the canal
  4. Perpendicular steps that protrude slightly into the canal
  5. Parallel steps that protrude slightly into the canal
  6. Monumental Staircase
  7. Perpendicular steps and platform that protrude into the canal
  8. An opening in the canal wall with no steps
  9. A ramp that is parallel with the canal
  10. Not Classified
