Colonnine
Colonnina which translates into "little columns" are cylindrical columns made of istrian stone that support Handrails which prevent pedestrians from falling into Canals. Colonnine are held in place by holes carved out of the Listolina known as Cojon. The base of each colonnina is inserted into these Cojon and lead is poured in through a trough in order to form a tight bond and provide structural support for each column.[1] Lead is the metal of choice because it is a soft metal, therefore it is easy to remove if any colonnina needs to be replaced or removed in the future. The Colonnina are useful forms of decorative architecture that can be found frequently in Venice.
