A pier is a wooden dock that extends into a canal with steps at the end. There are a 29 examples of piers in Venice. Since a pier projects into the canal, they are mainly found in wider Venetian canals such as the Grand Canal. Due to the nature of a pier as they project into the canal, piers are the least common dock type in Venice. One thing to be aware of about piers is that they are made out of wood, there is some concern for rotting to occur on these type of docks.[1]
