Wikimecum:Recommendation/Best Gelato

As is typical in Venice, the less touristy areas will have lower prices with similar or better quality. This applies to souvenirs, food, etc. Pizza and gelato will be reasonably good no matter where you go in Venice, but you risk getting ripped off if you buy in the main tourist thoroughfares. If you want the best deal, students in the past have recommended Algiubagiò as the place to go. Algiubagiò is right next to the Fondamente Nuove boat stop. It's also a roughly five-minute walk from the Ca' Corte apartments. To help you identify it, Algiubagiò has a big plastic ice cream cone out front.

The pizza at Algiubagiò is among the best students have reported finding in Venice. A slice of pizza margherita (plain cheese pizza) is 1.50 euro, while a slice with toppings is 2 euro. Not only does Algiubagiò have a wide variety of toppings, but they also make regular and deep-dish pizza. One common lunch option for students has been a large pizza diavola (spicy pepperoni), which costs around 11 euro. For comparison purposes, another pizza shop near the VPC charges 14 euro for the same thing. At Algiubagiò, personal pizzas are good enough for one person. A personal pizza margherita costs 5 euro.

Gelato is a great treat, and once again Algiubagiò does not disappoint. They can sell you from one to around 30 scoops, depending on how much you want (e.g., larger amounts to take home for parties, etc.). For one scoop of gelato, the price is 1 euro per cup or cone, and the price for each additional scoop drops, depending on the total number. For example, five scoops of gelato in a cup or cone costs 3.30 euro. Compare this price to as much as 5 euro (or probably more) for the same elsewhere in Venice. Algiubagiò also has a great selection of around ten different flavors. Some places sell gelato that tastes more like American ice cream than the creamy Italian treat, but Algiubagiò sells the real stuff.

The people that work at Algiubagiò make it great. They are very friendly and, on occasion, gave us special deals because we were regulars. Algiubagiò also sells drinks, alcohol, chips, cookies, and even pasta.

Another student chimes in: "Adding to the excellent recommendation above: if you head down to Campo Santa Margherita at any point, make sure you swing by Pizza al Volo. This place offers excellent pizza at cheap prices, averaging 1.50 euro for a slice. Although slightly out of the way, the pizzas definitely merit a try!"
