Introduction English
The channel edging the eastern end of the Castello and touches the island of San Pietro, home to one of the oldest settlements in the lagoon originally called 'Olivolo or Castel Olivolo'.�The cathedral of San Pietro, surrounded by a large green area, was the first seat of the Patriarch of Venice until its transfer in 1807, in the patriarchal palace erected next to the Basilica of San Marco.�It is located near the majestic bell tower in Istria stone, immortalized by Francesco Guardi (San Pietro di Castello, 1760-82, bottom).

Il canale orla l'estremit� orientale del sestiere di Castello e lambisce l'isola di San Piero, sede di uno dei pi� antichi insediamenti lagunari chiamato in origine 'Olivolo o Castel Olivolo'. La cattedrale di San Piero, attorniata da una vasta area verde, fu la prima sede del patriarca di Venezia fino al suo definitivo trasferimento, nel 1807, nel palazzo patriarcale eretto a fianco della basilica di San Marco. Si erge nelle vicinanze il maestoso campanile in pietra d'Istria, immortalato da Francesco Guardi (San Pietro di Castello, 1760-82, in basso).
