Pope Gregory IX, who came to Venice in 1224 to ask the support of the Republic against the Emperor Frederick II, seems to be, with the Doge Pietro Ziani in office from 1205 to 1229, the founder of the church and monastery of Santa Maria of the Virgins.�The two buildings were demolished after 1844 and in their place were dug dry docks.�The river, edging a part of the walls of the Arsenal, you enter the canal de San Piero.

Papa Gregorio IX, giunto a Venezia nel 1224 per chiedere l'appoggio della Repubblica contro l'imperatore Federico II, sembra essere, con Pietro Ziani doge in carica dal 1205 al 1229, il fondatore della chiesa e del monastero di Santa Maria delle Vergini. I due edifici furono demoliti dopo il 1844 e al loro posto si scavarono bacini di carenaggio. Il rio, che orla un tratto delle mura dell'Arsenale, si immette nel canal de San Piero.
