Le galeazze erano delle navi di tipo innovativo, derivate dalle tradizionali galere, ma di dimensioni e armamento maggiori. Fu anche grazie a questa inedita tipologia navale, introdotta per prima dalla flotta della Serenissima, che venne vinta la grande battaglia di Lepanto nell'ottobre 1571, che pose un deciso freno all'espansionismo dell'impero Turco. Questo ampio canale corre esclusivamente all'interno delle mura merlate dell'Arsenale, che s'intravvedono nel dipinto di William Turner (The Arsenal, 1840) dove, nei grandi volti coperti d'impianto quattrocentesco (in basso nella fotografia) vennero costruite, attorno alla met� del XVI secolo, anche queste innovative imbarcazioni
